HTML Help on the Web

Dec 2004 MS released security update MS05-001 which disables the use of HH ActiveX control HHCTL.OCX on the web. As a result web sites using the HTML Help ActiveX control (hhctrl.ocx) to display a HH TOC, Index, Version etc no longer work (local machine zone is unaffected).

How to Enable HH on this Website

To view the HTML Help content on the Helpware.net web site please do the following.

  1. Open RegEdit and set the following key value = 2
    (2 = allow HH in Local machine zone + Local intranet zone + Trusted sites zone).

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\HHRestrictions]
    "MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000002

    Alternatively download and run hhlevel2.reg to automatically setup this registry value.

  2. Open Internet Explorer Internet Options dialog
    and click Security Tab > Trusted Sites Icon > Sites Button.

  3. Add http://*.helpware.net/ to the Zone (must have the trailing slash)

  4. That's it. Before you test, first shutdown all instances of IE to clear any memory effects.
